Covenant Theology in Outline Form (Part 5)
Part 5 - God Graces The Cosmos Into Existence
Inter-Trinitarian Covenant
Relative to creation : The entire outline encompasses Genesis 1:1 -31 & it appears again in 1:26
As to Shema - God created, nobody else
As to Historical Prologue - the Dawn of History/Creation
General & Specific Stipulations - God judges Himself when pronouncing blessing upon His handiwork.
As to Establishment/Renewal, Document Clause, & Witnesses - God speaks within His own being; His words are His own documents; & the Heavenly Court & the living beings God created are witnesses.
Coram Deo: Other than Christ being the Redeemer-Mediator for the whole Covenantal System (Hebrews), what is cut in this covenant?
Hebrews 9:18 “Therefore not even the first covenant was inaugurated without blood.”
Leviticus 17:11 “For the life of the flesh is in the blood, and I have given it for you on the altar to make atonement for your souls, for it is the blood that makes atonement by the life.”
According to Romans 1:20, the purpose of the creation is to testify to God’s existence, attributes, & authority. We live in His temple as His people. He is our Creator & Deliverer.
The image I see in this text is that of God, the I AM THAT I AM, the ultimate Cosmic Architect, cutting Himself & bleeding the created order out of Himself, giving LIFE! to everything & every personal being. He cuts Himself figuratively, and out “bleeds” the whole of His cosmic temple.
Edenic Covenant (Covenant of Works)
Shema/Preamble & Historical Prologue : 27
So God created man in his own image,
in the image of God he created him;
male and female he created them.
General Stipulations: Genesis 1:28 And God blessed them. And God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”
Specific Stipulations: Genesis 1:29 And God said, “Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the face of all the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit. You shall have them for food. 30 And to every beast of the earth and to every bird of the heavens and to everything that creeps on the earth, everything that has the breath of life, I have given every green plant for food.”
Establishment(Equivalent to Renewal): Genesis 1:29 “And it was so.”
Document Clause, & Witnesses: Genesis 1:29
And God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good. And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day.
Marital Covenant
Shema/Preamble : Genesis 2:18
Then the Lord God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him.”
Historical Prologue:Genesis 2:19- 22
19 Now out of the ground the Lord God had formed every beast of the field and every bird of the heavens and brought them to the man to see what he would call them. And whatever the man called every living creature, that was its name. 20 The man gave names to all livestock and to the birds of the heavens and to every beast of the field. But for Adam there was not found a helper fit for him. 21 So the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and while he slept took one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh. 22 And the rib that the Lord God had taken from the man he made into a woman and brought her to the man
General Stipulations: Genesis 2:23 Then the man said,
“This at last is bone of my bones
and flesh of my flesh;
she shall be called Woman,
because she was taken out of Man.”
Specific Stipulations: Genesis 2:24 : Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh
Establishment(Equivalent to Renewal), Document Clause, & Witnesses: Genesis 2:25 :And the man and his wife were both naked and were not ashamed.
(I chose this one as Part 5 to illustrate that grace (Gematria 5) underwrites/is in every covenant).
Part 4 is Here, along with links to 1 - 3.
