Tackling Tradition 67: Apotheosis & Proverbs 30:1 - 6

The Words of Agur 30  The words of Agur son of Jakeh. The oracle. The man declares, I am weary, O God;      I am weary, O God, and worn out. 2  Surely I am too stupid to be a man.      I have not the understanding of a man. 3  I have not learned wisdom,      nor have I knowledge of the Holy One. 4  Who has ascended to heaven and come down?      Who has gathered the wind in his fists? Who has wrapped up the waters in a garment?      Who has established all the ends of the earth? What is his name, and what is his son's name?      Surely you know! Some people think that this text means that it is impossible for man to literally be taken up to heaven from the Earth, as if God is, through his mouthpiece, Agur (Gatherer of Wisdom)    ben Jakeh (Son of Obedience, Piety, Blameless),    precluding the possibility of Yeshua’s corpor...

AND THESE PEOPLE SHALL

The Resurrection 16  When the Sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices, so that they might go and anoint him.   2  And very early on the first day of the week, when the sun had risen, they went to the tomb.   3  And they were saying to one another, “Who will roll away the stone for us from the entrance of the tomb?”   4  And looking up, they saw that the stone had been rolled back—it was very large.   5  And entering the tomb, they saw a young man sitting on the right side, dressed in a white robe, and they were alarmed.   6  And he said to them, “Do not be alarmed. You seek Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He has risen; he is not here. See the place where they laid him.   7  But go, tell his disciples and Peter that he is going before you to Galilee. There you will see him, just as he told you.”   8...

THE PURPOSE OF THIS BOOK

The Resurrection 20  Now on the first day of the week Mary Magdalene came to the tomb early, while it was still dark, and saw that the stone had been taken away from the tomb.   2  So she ran and went to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved, and said to them, “They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid him.”   3  So Peter went out with the other disciple, and they were going toward the tomb.   4  Both of them were running together, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first.   5  And stooping to look in, he saw the linen cloths lying there, but he did not go in.   6  Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb. He saw the linen cloths lying there,   7  and the face cloth, which had been on Jesus' [ a ]  head, not lying with the linen cloths but folded up in a place by itself.   8...

HE IS RISEN INDEED!

The Resurrection 24  But on the first day of the week, at early dawn, they went to the tomb, taking the spices they had prepared.   2  And they found the stone rolled away from the tomb,   3  but when they went in they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus.   4  While they were perplexed about this, behold, two men stood by them in dazzling apparel.   5  And as they were frightened and bowed their faces to the ground, the men said to them, “Why do you seek the living among the dead?   6  He is not here, but has risen. Remember how he told you, while he was still in Galilee,   7  that the Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men and be crucified and on the third day rise.”   8  And they remembered his words, 9  and returning from the tomb they told all these things to the eleven and to all the rest. 10  Now it was Mary ...

THE LORD IS RISEN!

Jesus Has Risen 28  After the Sabbath, at dawn on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to look at the tomb. 2  There was a violent earthquake, for an angelof the Lord came down from heaven and, going to the tomb, rolled back the stone and sat on it.   3  His appearance was like lightning, and his clothes were white as snow.   4  The guards were so afraid of him that they shook and became like dead men. 5  The angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified.   6  He is not here; he has risen, just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay.   7  Then go quickly and tell his disciples: ‘He has risen from the dead and is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him.’ Now I have told you.” 8  So the women hurried away from the tomb, afraid yet filled with joy, and ran to tell his disciples....

The Crucifixion (Mark)

The Crucifixion 21  And they compelled a passerby, Simon of Cyrene, who was coming in from the country, the father of Alexander and Rufus, to carry his cross.   22  And they brought him to the place called Golgotha (which means Place of a Skull).   23  And they offered him wine mixed with myrrh, but he did not take it.   24  And they crucified him and divided his garments among them, casting lots for them, to decide what each should take.   25  And it was the third hour [ d ]  when they crucified him.   26  And the inscription of the charge against him read, “The King of the Jews.”   27  And with him they crucified two robbers, one on his right and one on his left. [ e ]   29  And those who passed by derided him, wagging their heads and saying, “Aha! You who would destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days,   30  save yourself, and come ...

The Crucifixion (Luke)

The Crucifixion 26  And as they led him away, they seized one Simon of Cyrene, who was coming in from the country, and laid on him the cross, to carry it behind Jesus.   27  And there followed him a great multitude of the people and of women who were mourning and lamenting for him. 28  But turning to them Jesus said,  “Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me, but weep for yourselves and for your children.   29  For behold, the days are coming when they will say, ‘Blessed are the barren and the wombs that never bore and the breasts that never nursed!’   30  Then they will begin to say to the mountains, ‘Fall on us,’ and to the hills, ‘Cover us.’   31  For if they do these things when the wood is green, what will happen when it is dry?” 32  Two others, who were criminals, were led away to be put to death with him.   33  And when they came to the place that is called The Skull, the...

The Crucifixion (Matthew)

The Crucifixion of Jesus 32  As they were going out, they met a man from Cyrene, named Simon, and they forced him to carry the cross.   33  They came to a place called Golgotha (which means “the place of the skull”).   34  There they offered Jesus wine to drink, mixed with gall; but after tasting it, he refused to drink it.   35  When they had crucified him, they divided up his clothes by casting lots.   36  And sitting down, they kept watch over him there.   37  Above his head they placed the written charge against him:  this is jesus, the king of the jews . 38  Two rebels were crucified with him, one on his right and one on his left.   39  Those who passed by hurled insults at him, shaking their heads   40  and saying, “You who are going to destroy the temple and build it in three days, save yourself! Come down from the cross, if you are the Son of God!”   41...
