Covenant Theology In Chart Form: The City of God Vs. The City of Man
Romans 1:18 The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of people, who suppress the truth by their wickedness, 19 since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. 20 For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.
I’ve done some more thinking about our excursions into Covenant Theology this past December (2024) in which we looked at the 7 Churches in Revelation as representations of the covenants that comprise the Covenant of Grace. In this chart, I have included the Edenic Covenant as Patmos (where Revelation’s narrative begins).
At its heart, Revelation is the story of the Beautific Vision & the City of God in every age. This is its story:
Mercy | Covenant | Justice |
Eden | Patmos | Toil & Sorrow |
Enoch | Ephesus | Lamech |
Ark | Smyrna | Babel |
Promised Land/ Abraham’s Camp | Pergamum | The 5 Cities on the Plain |
Sinai & Wilderness | Thyatira | Memphis & Thebes |
Shiloh | Sardis | Ashdod, Ashkelon, Gaza, Gath, Nineveh, Babylon |
Jerusalem & Antioch | Philadelphia | Rome |
Wachovia | Laodicea | Death & Hades |
Adonai | New Jerusalem | Gehenna |
Mercy | Covenant | Justice |
