On Women’s Suffrage
Doug Wilson & his fellow elders don’t agree with Women’s Suffrage.
On their model of the home, men and women are not co-equal, & hiding behind the alleged economy of the home in which men are said to be the de facto pater familias of the home is a poor excuse indeed. It’s worth noting that Mr. Longshore’s POV doesn’t seem to be underwritten by Scripture. Rather, he’s copacetic with repeal of the 19th Amendment because of some vague philosophy about the current atomization of American society.
Romans 1:20 states that the purpose of the created order is to reflect/testify to God’s existence, attributes, & authority. The rest ot the text indicts humanity for looking to its own image &/or that of the created order to do faith & practice.
These men are using the male/masculine image to do faith & practice. Women are denied ecclesiastical leadership in the local church & the right to vote in a free society based on their sex/gender. That is precisely the sort of thinking Paul calls morally unnatural in regards to faith & practice in Romans 1:26 - 27. It is morally unnatural to use the human image to do worship & sexual ethics & therefore all ethics.
Their POV commits 5 exegetical fallacies:
1. The Is-Ought Fallacy: Using the human image / biogenetics to do ethical reasoning. That’s what Hume did as to the human psyche, & contradicts Romans 1.
2. Special Pleading: If a male says he desires the office of elder, he goes through morals testing. Women stop at the sex/gender test.
3. Overspecification: The word “natural” is taken to mean “heteronormative” @ “unnatural” is taken to mean “homosexual” when the question is about homosexuality. When applied to women’s issues, “natural” means “normal,” & therefore “male” &. “unnatural” means “female.”
Vicious circularity: By using the human image —which is not necessary to do worship & sexual ethics — & suppressing God’s image — which is necessary since all ethics inhere in God’s image & authority — they are appealing to a philosophically arbitrary standard.
5. By appealing to Genesis as to the order of creation (male first) & ignoring or minimizing the fact that Adam sinned the greater, they are left to do what John Gill did in his commentary on 1 Timothy & reason that women should be denied leadership based on their alleged physical &/or emotional condition.
This also leads to idea that God the Son & the Holy Spirit are subordinate to God the Father & dependent on His essence & attributes for their own, which makes them originate & generate subsistences within the Godhead.
Doug Wilson & his Christian Nationalist ideology are heretical. People should flee from him & his teaching. May God have mercy on his soul & those of his followers.
