Marriage & “Natural Law”

I recently ran into a manifesto on marriage on social media, so I thought I would reply to it here.   It’s a remarkable example of how poorly taught people are these days & how poorly they think.

1. There is only male and female.

  • The Bible teaches that God created Adam & Eve & that Adam was male & Eve was female.    It doesn’t say anything about intersexed people, yet they exist.
  • To say that there is only male & female denies basic Biology & conflates God’s decretal will with God’s moral will, thus committing a Category Mistake/Error.

2. Marriage and family are a function of natural law

  • Not according to the Bible.  The Bible teaches that marriage & family are a function of God’s *moral* law.     God placed Adam & Eve into a (suzerain) covenant relationship, & this covenant represents all our marriages.

3. Marriage can only be one way.

  • The Bible teaches that the Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.

Saying the Bible doesn’t teach that we can expand the recognition of marriage to include homosexuals is like saying Leviticus 23 teaches Israel could never expand its liturgical calendar.   In truth Esther provides the rationale for Purim, & John places Yeshua at the Feast of Dedication.    The Lord’s Supper is an expansion of Passover, & baptism expands the mikvah & corresponds to circumcision.

Since the Bible doesn’t condemn homosexuality in general, why should we not allow them to marry?

4. Marriage is a function of biology. The ceremony is a matter of religion.

  • Both are functions of God’s moral law.   To make marriage a function of biology is to confuse what Is with what Ought To Be.

5. The marriage license merely stated what happened like a birth certificate.

  • True — but only to a point.   The marriage license is like a business license.   It represents a covenantal relationship & is a species of an oath.

6. We want to keep the government out of marriage.

  • That ought not to happen.   The Bible teaches the 3fold use of the Law & Gospel :  Individual, Ecclesiastical, & Civil.

7. It doesn't take a village it takes a family. Your kids are your kids.

  • Not according to the Bible.  Moses was addressing the nation when he said, “Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lordis one.[bYou shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.”

8. You are a mother not a birthing person because natural law is real... Or As I read somewhere the laws of nature and of nature's God..... :)

  • Let people refer to themselves as they choose & stop “Racaing” them (Matt. 5:22) & help them grow out of this phase just as Romans 15:1 teaches us.
O LORD, Hear our prayer(s)!
