Let’s take a look at the 4th Commandment in Exodus 20
8 “Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.9 Six days you shall labor, and do all your work,10 but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, you, or your son, or your daughter, your male servant, or your female servant, or your livestock, or the sojourner who is within your gates. 11 For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.
The 4th Commandment is part of an increasingly specific list.
God is the only Creator-Deliverer.
Worship no other gods; there is only one, the I AM THAT I AM.
Don’t take God’s name in vain. Don’t say “Thus says the LORD!” when the LORD has not so said.
The Sabbath is blessed by God. Find 1 day out of 7 to rest & worship.
Obey the Law & Gospel expressed by prophetic, ecclesiastical, & civil authority.
What happens when people get the Law & Gospel wrong? The start working & worship & rest become less important.
The 7th Day Sabbath can be interpreted both literally & figuratively. The 4th Commandment has 2 parts: General & Specific. The General principle is to worship & rest. The 7th Day qua 7th Day (ie calendar day) is a civil regulation that can be modified because the Sabbath was made for us to administer & observe nor to rule over us legalistically as if liturgical activity is a millstone we have to push/turn.
- Worship no other gods.
- Make no idols!
- Teach & preach/prophesy.
- Administer the [worship(work-worship-rest)] cycle.
- Obey rightful sacred & secular authority (with promise of long life, which includes work, worship, & rest.
= You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. 38 This is the great and first commandment. (Matthew 22:37–38, ESV)
