When you think about, the 4th Commandment reminds us that we must lay down our (rooted) works righteousness in order to be justified,
12 And the Lord said to Moses, 13 “You are to speak to the people of Israel and say, ‘Above all you shall keep my Sabbaths, for this is a sign between me and you throughout your generations, that you may know that I, the Lord, sanctify you. 14 You shall keep the Sabbath, because it is holy for you. Everyone who profanes it shall be put to death. Whoever does any work on it, that soul shall be cut off from among his people. 15 Six days shall work be done, but the seventh day is a Sabbath of solemn rest, holy to the Lord. Whoever does any work on the Sabbath day shall be put to death. 16 Therefore the people of Israel shall keep the Sabbath, observing the Sabbath throughout their generations, as a covenant forever. 17 It is a sign forever between me and the people of Israel that in six days the Lordmade the heavens and the earth, and on the seventh day he rested and was refreshed.’”
Recall that all worship regulations are governed by this commandment. Also, the preceding 3 commandments lead up to this one.
Hear, O Israel, the LORD our God is ONE God.
- You are to worship no other god or gods.
- You must refrain from making idols & especially bowing down to them
- God is holy; the secret things belong to the LORD our God, but the revealed belong to us & our children forever. Do not speak that which God has not said.
- God created everything in 6 days & rested on the 7th & blessed it. Consequently, refrain from work on the 7th Day. Worship & rest.
- Obey rightful authority, & yourself & your people will find long life.
There is one God, the I AM THAT I AM. Worship Him only, making no idols (no literal & no figurative), speaking what God has spoken not what He has not, finding a balance with respect to the [worship(work-worship-rest)] cycle, living out God’s moral will in harmonious submission to rightful (hopefully righteous) prophetic, priestly, & civil authority(is).
The Bible teaches the 3 uses of the Law: individual/familial, ecclesiastical, & civil. We are to cease working/striving for our own salvation just as we are to cease working/striving on the Sabbatb Day. Just as the maximum penalty for working on the Sabbath is death, so is the maximum penalty for striving with God to contribute to your own justification.
O LORD, Hear our prayer(s)!
