Think Like Abraham!

How so?

Adam & Abraham are two of the biggest Patriarchs in Genesis.    Adam is the Patriarch of all of humanity just as Abraham is the Patriarch of all Israel (both spiritual & ethnic).

In addition, the command to be fruitful & multiply & exercise dominion isn’t just a command, it’s a promise & a blessing.   The same is true with respect to God’s promises to Abraham.  Both also involve Adam & Abraham & their respective families producing children/offspring.  These two declarations on God’s part are therefore analogous.

In order to bring those promises to pass, God provided Adam & Abraham the means to fulfill their covenant obligations.   Adam was given Eve (& vice versa), & Abraham & Sarah were given each other too.

In relation to one particular person who they loved who was integral to the fulfillment of God’s covenantal promises, Adam was given Eve & Abraham was given Isaac.

Both Eve & Isaac were faced with life or death situations that could potentially sabotage the fulfillment of God’s promises.   Eve was faced with temptation that could (& did) result in death.  Abraham was told to sacrifice Issac.

When confronted with the harsh reality of what might happen if Isaac died, Abraham reasoned that God would raise Isaac from the dead (Hebrews 11:19)& would make good on His promises to Abraham (& through him, everyone ever whom Abraham represented).  He chose to obey God.

By way of contrast, Adam didn’t reason the same way.  He decided to join Eve in death rather than think like Abraham.

Therefore, one of the great lessons we learn in Genesis isn’t just to choose life over knowledge on the premise that God will educate us in due course of time, it’s also to trust & obey God when tempted or otherwise confronted by situations that might (seem to) get in the way of God ‘s promises to Adam, Noah, Abraham, Moses, Samuel, David, & many others, including both Yeshua & ourselves.
