Why Is Covetousness Idolatry?
For you may be sure of this, that everyone who is sexually immoral or impure, or who is covetous (that is, an idolater), has no inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God. (Ephesians 5:5, ESV)
Covetousness is idolatry because when someone sins, they are loving themselves more than God, thereby coveting their own love away from the LORD.
What is righteousness? To love the LORD completely, totally, & perfectly before all else, then to love everyone & everything other than the LORD (whom you are to love first), & then to so love yourself —-> in that order @ at that quality. (Matt 22: 37 - 40)
To love yourself first is still steal the love the LORD is due, which means you desire it above the LORD. You may as well be worshipping yourself.
