By Any Other Name

Charles Spurgeon Uncensored writes:

Charles Spurgeon mixed Hinduism with Christianity by giving God the TITLES of Hindu gods—"the Preserver" and "the Destroyer."

The post with the title, "the Creator" is found in Charles Spurgeon's sermon, "The Echo" No. 767.

The post with title, "the Preserver" is found in Spurgeon's sermon, "Who is This?" No. 3394.

The post with the title, "the Destroyer" is found in Spurgeon's sermon, "The Great Birthday and Our Coming of Age" No. 1815.

The King James Bible refers to God, the Creator/the creator five times, so Spurgeon's use of "the Creator" as a title for God, is biblical but he leavened the lump by also giving God the titles of Hindu gods—"the Preserver" and "the Destroyer."

Here Spurgeon gave God the title, "Lord of the Universe" which is the Hindu god, Lord Vishnu.

By way of reply…

No, that’s just legalism.

1. Where does the Bible teach that principle?

Nowhere.

2. According to the Bible & the Westminster Shorter Catechism, God is infinite, eternal, & unchangeable.   In addition, the Bible teaches a lot of representational theology, & it teaches that the created order is created in God’s image.

You ought to be able to discern that if there are beings of great magnitude out there, they bear God’s image, so if they claim to title itself bears God’s image as well.  Our names have meanings & theirs do too, & that meaning is to one degree &/or another a name/title that inheres in the mind of God & thus reflects God’s image, thus telling us something about God, not just the being named/titled.

3. All names & titles inhere in the mind of God to the exclusion of all other claimants.  In other words, God owns them anyway.

4. Pay attention to the way Scripture portrays pseudodeities.

For example, the I AM He statements in Isaiah 40 - 55 are also statements against the House of Israel’s pantheon just like the text of Psalm 82.

5.  How does the Bible depict these pseudodeities?   They are unjust judges, ephemeral, & generally a bunch of territorial spirits who are at times capricious, duplicitous, &tc. & crave God’s authority & power. Beings of great magnitude who accept worship are usurpers of God’s power & authority.

6.  The Bible answers idolatry, witchcraft, & sorcery through both intuitive (words) & inductive (objects) prophecy.   The binding ritual in the hands of the Witch of Endor is an act of inductive prophecy in the hands of Ezekiel.

When Spurgeon used those words, whether or not he realized it, he was engaging in an act of intuitive prophecy to disempower Hinduism’s hold on names rightly ascribed to God.   That’s how intuitive & inductive prophecy work separately & together in spiritual warfare.

As deeply concerned about sorcery & witchcraft as you are, one would think he wouldn’t be prone to allow Hindu pseudodeities & their followers the privilege of using these titles — which the LORD Himself, and we through Him, own.

I choose Sola Scriptura as my rule of faith not legalism & liturgical philosophy.

This Is the Way; This is our prayer.

O LORD, Hear our prayers!
