Covenant Theology In Outline Form 37: Marriage & Family Edition

The Bible teaches the 3 uses of the Law & applies to individuals, families, ecclesiastical & civil institutions, governments, & whole societies. 


The Bible depicts expresses every covenant from God in the form of a suzerain covenant.  Marriage & Family are institutions circumscribed & governed by way of suzerain covenants, namely the Eternal Covenant of Grace itself & the Marriage Covenant. 


Shema 

  • And the rib that the Lord God had taken from the man he made into a woman and brought her to the man (Genesis 2:22, ESV)

Historical Prologue 

  • Then the man said,

General Stipulations 

  • “This at last is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; 

Specific Stipulations 

  • she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.”

Covenant Renewal 

  • 24 Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, 

Document Clause & Witnesses 

  • and they shall become one flesh. 

Victory Statement 

  • 25 And the man and his wife were both naked and were not ashamed.  (Genesis 2:23–25, ESV)
