Slouching Toward Gomorrah (Part 2)

People read an awful lot into the threat the men of Sodom issued.  For them, it’s all about homosexuality.  In reality, Genesis 19 itself says that they were there because they felt judged.    Lot seeks to remonstrate with them & they accuse him of hypocrisy.  Genesis 19 doesn’t state anything you wrote.  It does, however, that the angels were there in response to the great outcry. The same story repeats in Judges 19.   There, the lynch mob issues the same threat & rape - murders a female.    If Genesis 19 is the proverb against homosexuality you obviously think it is, then how much more Judges is a proverb against heterosexuality.  What happened in Sodom? The proximate reason was the failure to find ten righteous people, and the men who rejected them were a mob of Angry Religious Bigots who very likely planned to either rape them or intoxicate the messengers and involve them in a pagan rite. They were doing the same thing the pe...

Tackling Tradition 100: Homosexuality & the Prelapsarian Estate

Those who appeal to the Design Argument via their understanding of Romans 18 - 32 don’t understand the implications of their own argument.  How so?  The traditional view entails the belief that Adam & Eve were created male & female & also heterosexual; or, it was a preference either God set (since they were created as adults); or a preference that they themselves reflexively set.  Genesis 2:16–17 (ESV) : And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, “You may surely eat of every tree of the garden, 17 but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.” According to Genesis, LORD’s morals test for Adam & Eve was very specific & had nothing to do with marriage or sexual preference/orientation, &tc.    Consequently, if they had decided against heterosexuality in favor of homosexuality, it would not have been a sin.     Therefore, the existence of homosexual...

Halloween/Reformation Day/Purim Reading: Esther

Haman Plots Against the Jews 3  After these things King Ahasuerus promoted Haman the Agagite, the son of Hammedatha, and advanced him and set his throne above all the officials who were with him.  2  And all the king's servants who were at the king's gate bowed down and paid homage to Haman, for the king had so commanded concerning him. But Mordecai did not bow down or pay homage.  3  Then the king's servants who were at the king's gate said to Mordecai, “Why do you transgress the king's command?”  4  And when they spoke to him day after day and he would not listen to them, they told Haman, in order to see whether Mordecai's words would stand, for he had told them that he was a Jew. 5  And when Haman saw that Mordecai did not bow down or pay homage to him, Haman was filled with fury.  6  But he disdained[a] to lay hands on Mordecai alone. So, as they had made known to him the people of Mordecai, Haman sought to destroy[b] all the Jews, t...

Halloween/Reformation Day/Purim Reading: Esther 1 & 2

The King's Banquets 1  Now in the days of Ahasuerus, the Ahasuerus who reigned from India to Ethiopia over 127 provinces,  2  in those days when King Ahasuerus sat on his royal throne in Susa, the citadel,  3  in the third year of his reign he gave a feast for all his officials and servants. The army of Persia and Media and the nobles and governors of the provinces were before him,  4  while he showed the riches of his royal glory and the splendor and pomp of his greatness for many days, 180 days. 5  And when these days were completed, the king gave for all the people present in Susa the citadel, both great and small, a feast lasting for seven days in the court of the garden of the king's palace.  6  There were white cotton curtains and violet hangings fastened with cords of fine linen and purple to silver rods and marble pillars, and also couches of gold and silver on a mosaic pavement of porphyry, marble, mother-of-pearl, and pr...

Tackling Tradition: 99 : Who Is Left Behind?

The way the rapture is believed & taught by a great many works, people are remove & retained at the inauguration of a literal 7 Year Tribulation, or in the middle, or at the very end.     On this model, only believers are removed & retained, after which they return on the day Christ returns to the Earth.  Let’s take a look at Matthew 13 on this subject.  24  He put another parable before them, saying, “The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a man who sowed good seed in his field,  25  but while his men were sleeping, his enemy came and sowed weeds[c] among the wheat and went away.  26  So when the plants came up and bore grain, then the weeds appeared also.  27  And the servants[d] of the master of the house came and said to him, ‘Master, did you not sow good seed in your field? How then does it have weeds?’  28  He said to them, ‘An enemy has done this.’ So the servants said to him, ‘Then do you ...

Tackling Tradition 98: Baptism & Local Church Membership

Most Christians on the Earth are accustomed to the idea that, in order to be a member of a local church, baptism is an absolute requirement. Is this true when the Bible is correctly understood, or an ecclesiastical tradition? It is our belief @ Philadelphia Apostolic Presbyterian in WSNC that this is an ecclesiastical tradition that has been passed down through the ages & that the requirement that males be circumcised in the Old Testament qualifies as case law not a rigid command that rules over Abraham & his offspring in a manner that is inelastic.  And he said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. (Mark 2:27)l To illustrate, let’s look at 7th Day Sabbatarianism again.  7th Day Sabbath worship has never been abolished. It has been expanded, just as circumcision had never been repealed.  Rather, it has been expanded via baptism.   In fact, baptism came before circumcision according to 1 Pet. 3:21.     T...
